Thank you for visiting my 2018 Promise Walk for Preeclampsia fundraising page.
As you may know last year while pregnant with Baby Benjamin I had a sudden and very scary case of preeclampsia. Showing no signs of trouble throughout my pregnancy, at 36 weeks I suddenly lost sight in one eye and had blood pressures well over 200 systolic. The following days were scary and uncomfortable, however, I had the benefit of being at a world class hospital and as a nurse was able to recognize the trouble I was in and seek help immediately. Without these advantages my story could have had a much different ending.
Although rarely discussed, preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death globally. By conservative estimates, these disorders are responsible for 76,000 maternal and 500,000 infant deaths each year. Even with that prevalence when I asked my doctor what was the cause of my illness his answer: "We still don't really know."
Please consider donating or take a minute to visit the preeclampsia website if you or anyone you love is pregnant to become familiar with the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia.
