Preeclampsia is a life-threatening disorder of pregnancy that effects both the mother and baby. It impacts 1 in 12 pregnancies; an estimated 10 million women worldwide each year. Preeclampsia accounts for 20% of all babies in the NICU at any given time, and it kills 500,000 babies and 76,000 mothers every single year. There are no known causes for preeclampsia, and the only “cure” starts with the often premature delivery of the baby. All women who have had preeclampsia walk away with a doubled risk of stroke and quadrupled risk of high blood pressure later in life. The Preeclampsia Foundation is working to change this! 92 cents of every dollar raised by the Promise Walks goes directly toward programs and services that provide patient support and education, raise public awareness, catalyze research, and improve healthcare practices for millions of mothers and their babies every year who are impacted by preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
