After our last doctor appointment only two days prior, my husband said "we need to pack our bags." We knew the inevitable was about to happen. My blood pressures were consistently rising & weekly labs were showing that my organs were not functioning properly. In the doctor's office, with the highest blood pressure reading yet and 500+++ protein, we were transferred to labor & delivery once the results of my expedited lab results were in. The maternal fetal medicine specialist was able to show us on a graph how quickly my liver and kidney functions were decreasing. It was time to meet our baby.
After 22 hours of magnesium, pitocin, & breaking of my waters, at 1:06 p.m. on June 5, 2015 Maddox Grey Brewer joined us earthside at 34 weeks + 5 days gestation. The most beautiful 4 lb 10 oz baby we had ever seen. The NICU team had been on standby since before the second phase of delivery. We were able to have a peaceful birthing experience to welcome our sweet baby despite my condition. Maddox was cared for in the NICU for 19 days before he was able to join us at home.
In the days following delivery, I developed Class II postpartum HELLP syndrome, preeclampsia's evil twin. My platelets dropped to 68,000 before slowly rising enough that I could be discharged from the hospital. I have spent the past two years reviewing medical records and speaking with my trusted OB/GYN, trying to put the pieces of our story together.
