Superman Silas

Preeclampsia.

We spent months of our life praying and working through this disorder:  50+ days in the hospital, 13 weeks of bedrest, and hearing the words “NICU” and “stroke risk” more times than any family should. And even though my precious baby boy is miraculously healthy and happy, I don’t pretend that what we went through wasn’t a trauma. On my body, on my mind, on my spirit.

But now I think it is time to channel those emotions into helping other mamas out there going through their own pre-e battles by funding education and research into this disorder.

Consider these preeclampsia facts:

  • Preeclampsia affects 5-8% of all pregnancies.
  • Globally, preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death. By conservative estimates, these disorders are responsible for 76,000 maternal and 500,000 infant deaths each year.
  • Once the course of preeclampsia has begun, it cannot be reversed and the health of the mother must be constantly weighed against the health of the baby.
  • Women who have had preeclampsia have three to four times the risk of high blood pressure and double the risk for heart disease and stroke.
  • BUT the cause (etiology) of preeclampsia remains UNKNOWN. (How is this possible?!)
  • And the treatment is essentially the same as it was 100 years ago.
  • Preeclampsia is still one of the lowest funded research areas in terms of what health economists call Disability Adjusted Lost Years.

So let’s change some of this, shall we?

Please consider donating to the Preeclampsia Foundation’s efforts to fund education and research into this life-threatening disorder of pregnancy.

And you can come walk with us on Saturday, May 19!
